Alternatives to a trading journal for fixing trading psychology

By the Steadied team · Clinical model by a psychotherapist who trades · Last reviewed

Short answer

A trading journal records the trade after the fact: entry, exit, size, result, and sometimes a note about how you felt. What it can’t do is measure the trader’s state before and during the trade, which is where rules usually break. The alternatives worth considering are the tools that work in that window, before the open and while the position is on.

What a journal does well, and where it stops

A journal is good at the record. It shows which setups work, which hours cost you, and how often you left your plan. That record matters, and nothing below replaces it.

The limit is timing. You log the trade after it’s closed, when you’re calm again. You make the decision while your state is shifting. You can know your plan and still feel pulled to move a stop, chase an entry, or size up after a loss. By the time the journal entry is written, that moment has passed.

The alternatives, compared

Alternatives to a trading journal, what each does, where it works and where it stops
CategoryWhat it doesWhere it worksWhere it stops
Trading journalsRecord trades after the close, often with emotion tags, a tilt meter or a rule adherence scoreAfter the closeMeasures discipline from your trades and tags, mostly after the fact. Not the trader in the moment
AI coaching or chat appsInterpret your trade data and answer questions in conversationMostly after the session, some in real timeAdvice comes from the data you logged. Quality depends on the model behind it
Human trading psychology coachesOne-to-one work on the patterns behind your decisionsBetween sessionsNot at the screen while you trade. Cost and availability vary
Meditation and mindfulness appsBuild general attention and calmBefore or outside the sessionNot built around trading decisions or your rules
Platform lockout and rule-enforcement toolsBlock or close trades when a limit is hit (daily loss, trade count, cooldown)During the session, at the platformStop the order, not the state that produced it. Work on the platforms they support
Pre-market readiness checksScore sleep, stress and focus before the open, sometimes with a stand-down bandBefore the open, once a dayOne number with no direction, so it can't tell overcharged from shut down. Not during the session
Steadied (state measurement instrument)Measures your state before and during the session and gives a next step for that stateBefore the open, before each trade, after the closeNot a journal, not an AI coach, not a lockout. It doesn't block trades or give signals

These categories aren’t mutually exclusive. Many traders keep a journal for the record and add one tool for the moment of decision. For the named tools in each group, see behavioral trading tools compared.

How Steadied works in that window

A journal records the trade. Steadied measures the trader.

  • Before the open: the Pre-Market scan. A body-level read of your distress, taken cold before the first chart. The day starts with a measurement instead of a mood.
  • Before each trade: the state check. A reading takes seconds. It places you on a signed scale from Shut Down (-8) through Centered to Overcharged (+8), with a zone and a verdict attached: trade, reset first, or stop. When you read Overcharged or Shut Down, you follow the short set of steps matched to that state to get back toward Centered, instead of trading through it.
  • Underneath it: the pattern assessment. Built from the same kinds of questions researchers and clinicians use, it names the patterns that repeat in your trading, in plain language, each one tied to the behavior it costs you.
  • After the close: the debrief. How often you drifted from your plan, what set it off, and what helped. Each trade you log during the session carries its own on-plan or off-plan check, with the broken rule named, so the day’s record is already there when you sit down.

Steadied opens as its own window and stays on top of your trading platform (desktop Chrome or Edge), so a state check is a glance, not a hunt through your tabs. Your readings sync across devices, so you can also check in on your phone.

The clinical model comes from a psychotherapist with over two decades in clinical practice and nearly 10 years as an independent trader. AI works within that model to interpret your readings. There is no chat and no coaching.

Are you fit to trade today? Checking before the market opens

Most pre-market routines prepare the plan: levels, news, setups. Few measure the person who will execute it.

The Steadied Pre-Market scan is a body scan taken before the session begins. It reads what you bring to the desk, the distress your body is carrying before the first chart, and gives a verdict before you risk anything. If the reading says you’re not ready, you know before the open, not after the first loss.

During the session, the same idea continues. The state check tells you where you are right now and what that state tells you to do. When something feels off, a short scan looks more closely at what you feel, what you picture, what your body is doing, and what you are thinking.

Detection sharpens in about two weeks of daily practice. Full integration typically takes 8 to 12 weeks.

From the first traders

“It's mostly the space it creates between me and the market.”

“I feel more confident because I don't feel so alone anymore when I freak out. I know now that the app helps me, so when my emotions rise, I know I can use the app and interrupt it.”

Laura

“I have a market edge. Steadied is my personal edge; it keeps me in the driver's seat.”

“I'm an emotional person, so I'm an emotional trader. Climbing out of the fog to say ‘WTF just happened?’ after realizing the damage to my account is a painful, humbling experience I'm far too familiar with. While interacting with Steadied, I use my emotions and physical cues as a strength to detect potential hijacking. I can drive the bus or be a passenger.”

Carlos T.

“I used it for 2 weeks so far and it's like having a new trading partner with really good habits that rub off on you!”

“It has helped slow me down which was annoying at first but when it slows you down it's helping you feel things and put words to what I am feeling and it has got me taking better trades and not feeling like I am missing every opportunity. It has its quirks but you can tell it was made by someone who understands this stuff.”

Frequently asked questions

What are the alternatives to a trading journal for fixing trading psychology?
Tools that work before and during the trade, not just after it. That includes human coaches, meditation apps, pre-market readiness checks, platform lockout tools, and state measurement instruments like Steadied, which measures your state before the open and before each trade and gives a next step: trade, reset first, or stop. Many traders keep a journal for the record and add one of these for the moment of decision.
Is there a way to check if I'm emotionally fit to trade before the market opens?
Yes. Steadied's Pre-Market scan is a body scan taken before the first chart. It reads what you bring to the desk and gives a verdict before the session begins, so the day starts with a measurement instead of a mood.
Which trading psychology app should I use?
It depends on the problem. If you need a record of your trades, use a journal. If you need a hard stop at your limits, use a lockout tool. If you know your rules but break them under pressure, you need something that measures your state in the moment. That's what Steadied is built for.
Trading psychology coach vs app: which actually helps?
They do different jobs. A coach works with you between sessions on the patterns behind your decisions. An app can be at the screen while you trade. Steadied was built by a psychotherapist who trades, so the clinical model is in the app you use during the session. It's not a replacement for therapy or coaching.
Why do I keep breaking my trading rules even though I know them?
Because the version of you that wrote the rules is calm, and the version taking the trade is in a different state. After a loss, attention narrows and the urge to get it back feels like conviction. Steadied helps you notice that state before the next entry and practice responding deliberately.
Is Steadied a trading journal or an AI coach?
Neither. A journal records the trade. Steadied measures the trader. AI works only within the clinical model to interpret your readings. There is no chat and no coaching.
What is Steadied for traders?
Steadied (steadied.app) is a trading psychology app for independent and retail active traders. It gives you a pre-market body scan, in-session state checks, a pattern assessment, and a post-close debrief, in a window that floats on top of your trading platform. It was built by a psychotherapist who trades.
